Counted Dustin Poirier Out at UFC 195? Bad Idea
Written by A.G Lee
Dustin Poirier (12-4 UFC) and Joe Duffy (2-1 UFC) were set to fight at UFC Fight Night 76 as the main event, but the fight was scratched due to Duffy pulling out of the match due to a concussion incurred during a sparring session. But that fight was rescheduled to UFC 195 where Poirier looked to trade shots with Duffy in the first before switching the gameplan to a takedown heavy approach where he dominated Duffy with insane ground and pound in a clear unanimous decision upset over the highly touted Joseph Duffy. This win puts Poirier on a 3 fight win streak in the lightweight division and over the last man who beat featherweight champion Conor McGregor.
With that win over someone like Joe Duffy who was pushing for a rematch against Conor McGregor, as the champion has been making his claim to fight lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos, Poirier could also now make that push. But that push wouldn’t be enough to enter the McGregor sweepstakes as it’s already packed full of #1 contenders, former champions, and an actual champion. Those people being Frankie Edgar (14–4–1 UFC) , Jose Aldo (7-1 UFC), and Rafael Dos Anjos (14-5 UFC). Dustin Poirier with another win or two could be making his claim and avenge that first round loss by TKO to McGregor at UFC 178 if he can continue to dominate the way he did tonight.
So what do fans think? The new improved Dustin Poirier is a serious contender at lightweight and can possibly avenge his loss to Conor McGregor sometime in the future? Or does “Diamond” need to do more impressing to leave a statement in the division for the fans and the UFC brass to give him the big names he is hoping for?
