After the loss at UFC 196 McGregor admitted his faults and flaws losing in the second round to Nate Diaz after as most fans and watchers saw and have said that he had control of until the second half of round two.

Many have been calling for McGregor to go back down to the 145lb division and defend his belt instead of stalling the division and also put his power to better use against those of a more natural weight class instead of fighting someone in the 170lb division. Someone like Nate Diaz who more than took the blows of McGregor, but kept coming forward and delivering blows of his own to put the brash Irishman into panic mode prompting an ill fated take down attempt.
But McGregor wanted none of it as Dana White and Lorenzo Fertita visited McGregor after the fight and wanted to ask McGregor to defend his belt for his next fight. McGregor had other plans says White :

“After the fight, Lorenzo (Fertitta) and I went up to Conor’s house that he’s renting here in Las Vegas and started talking about what are you thinking, what’s next?,” White said tonight on ESPN’s “SportsCenter.” “And he was obsessed – obsessed – with fighting Nate Diaz again. Obviously, Lorenzo and I tried to argue with him and say, ‘Let’s go back down to ’45 and defend your title, or if you really want the Diaz fight that bad, do it at ’55.’ But he wants to fight at 170. Even his coach, (John) Kavanagh, tried to get him to get off this rematch and off the 170-pound fight, but it’s what he wanted. And he’s going to get it.”

With Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar set to fight again also at UFC 200 for the interim belt, McGregor will have a definite opponent to return to win, lose, or draw after UFC 200. Or if neither decide to show up McGregor will fight regardless as he’s been known to do by fans, pundits, and even White himself as he says.

“Conor McGregor is a guy who has had fights fall out seven days before he’s supposed to defend his title, and he steps up and takes on all comers,” White said. “The guy fights anybody, anywhere, any time. He’s stepped up on late notice and done these things. He wants this Nate Diaz fight, we’ll give it to him.

“We’ll make Frankie and Jose the interim title, and whoever wins that fight will fight Conor McGregor for the 145-pound title. Win, lose or draw in this fight against Nate Diaz, he will go in and fight either Jose or Frankie – whoever wins at (UFC) 200.”
