MB Bike the Drive has Officially Started the Summer

Spread the word

If you’re in Chicago, you have suffered a brutally long winter. Hopefully, all of the cold confusion is over with now that we are rolling into June. To bring in the heat correctly, MB Financial Bank started the summer by sponsoring MB Bike the Drive.

What’s happening

Not to tute my city’s horn (tute) but Chicago is now the place to be when it comes to bicycling in reference to Bicycling MagazineThey have officially dubbed the Windy City the number one spot for a cyclist. Lakeshore Drive is closed for 6 hours every Memorial Day weekend exiling both gas and electric vehicles to make room for the human-powered bikers.  If you pay for the event, the proceeds go to the Active Transportation Alliance to help mitigate risk for commuters that do not utilize vehicles or public transportation.

My experience

The course is 30 miles long. If you are not used to riding like me, your rear (butt) will be sore for a few reasons.  For one, my seat is not comfortable, two, the cold weather kept me from my frequent rides, and three, Lakeshore Drive isn’t the smoothest road. Regardless, I met the 30-mile challenge and celebrated with 5 apples, 3 bananas, and 1 Cliff bar. When you’re tired, everything is delicious because they could have given me dirt chips and I would have maxed out. When it was all said and done, the accomplished feeling is felt because you got some cool pics for your Instagram.

Get your bike ready

If you missed the event this year, don’t fret because it will more than likely happen again next year. This is the 17th annual event and the best one I’ve been to yet. Lakeshore will be open to all riders so bring the kids. For you pros-riders out there, keep in mind that everyone isn’t as fast as you so be courteous to other attendants.
