Ronda Rousey Return Reebok

Written by A.G Lee

As many things as people might want to say about former womens UFC bantam weight champion Ronda Rousey it’s getting more and more apparent that people are wanting her back for very specific reasons. Ever since her bantamweight debut against the now deposed Miesha Tate in March of 2012 where she took the belt away from Miesha Tate fans, media, and companies knew the MMA world just saw something shifting the whole playing field.

The UFC had it’s doubts until then about womens MMA until that point instantly making her the undisputed womens bantamweight champion upon her entrance to the UFC. Ever since then she has evolved into a worldwide icon and MMA superstar in her own right deservedly so.

But as we all know not every champion stays on their throne forever. Even GSP lost once right? And that was apparent in her November 15 loss to Holly Holm by a headkick that shocked the world taking the belt from a MMA phenom that most thought was so far ahead of womens MMA that she seemed untouchable.

Holm Kick Ronda Rousey

With Holly Holm taking that belt from Ronda Rousey we as fans expected the UFC womens bantamweight division to be dominated and have a champion that could show her dominance over the crowd the same way as she did over the champion.

Well that’s what we all expected at the least, considering Holly Holm beat Ronda Rousey in such an impressive fashion that it would’ve been a logical conclusion in a fast evolving sport and division.

Yep we were all wrong.  Holly Holm did all the rounds and proved Ronda Rousey wrong in one regard and that was the fact that she could handle the duties of being champion except defending it.

In her UFC 196 title defense one of the biggest cards in UFC history Holly Holm was cruising to being the first woman to defend the womens UFC bantamweight belt since Ronda Rousey, until she hit the mat in the 5th round with Miesha Tate. Tate took full advantage of the situation by submitting a stunned Holly Holm with a RNC finally becoming a champion the UFC fulfilling her dreams.

Fast forward to UFC 200 a seemingly stacked generational mega card headed by some of the biggest stars in the UFC and in all of the shuffle of Jon Jones being busted by USADA and losing his spot on the card to Anderson Silva and Lesnar vs Hunt being the main card to not.

Miesha Tate vs Amanda Nunes became the main event of the most stacked card since UFC 100. Noone could blame a lot of people for counting out Nunes in this fight as Tate has been in the trifecta of the UFC womens elite in the bantamweight division while Nunes was still a wild card.

And as if by an act of MMA divine karma Nunes made history at UFC 200 shocking the world herself by using the same technique on Tate to take the belt that Tate used on Holm. Not only did she win the womens UFC bantamweight belt, but she also stopped the Brazilian champion UFC void after 2 days in which there has always been a Brazilian UFC champion in the UFC since 2005. Ontop of that she became the first Brazilian female champion in the UFC and the fourth woman to hold the womens bantamweight belt since it’s induction.

With the belt changing so many hands since the changing of the guard from Ronda Rousey to Holly Holm, the womens bantamweight division has been going through a bit of chaos and maybe even a slight bit of devaluation without a dominant champion.

With the belt being passed around like a hot potato fans might see Ronda Rousey fighting Julianna Pena or someone else far outside what fans used to think was the womens bantamweight elite of just Tate and Holm. But in the case that Nunes stays the champ or whoever it might be Ronda gets the title shot upon her return.

A definite con in the list of pros as some fans might see this as the wild wild west of what used to be the beginning of the division where not many believed that fighters in the division rankings were where they were supposed to be or the likes of it.

And with such chaos there’s always a need for order and that order might just be Ronda Rousey coming back, getting her belt back, and settling the division once again as she at the least seems to get closer to mounting her return.
