What Not To Eat Before Bed

A lot of us are night owls. Like most night owls, we like to hunt at night. Unlike most night owls, we hunt in the refrigerator for satisfaction, not survival. Although there are no rules for eating late at night, there should be, if you intend to lose or maintain your weight. Steering clear of a few key items can keep you on track with your weight loss goals.

One of the most common late-night snacks we indulge in is chocolate. Sure dark chocolate has its health benefits but it may also have caffeine! Caffeine will keep you awake; the longer you stay awake, the more you want to eat. This could result in unwanted weight gain not only from chocolate but from other foods you might end up snacking on. Plus, you lose out on sleep which is another no-no.

B-Dubs have some of the best wings but you probably want to stay away from hot and spicy flavors late at night. Eating too many spicy foods is a sure way to introduce acid reflux to your bed time stories. Typically acid reflux takes place when lying down so to avoid this, avoid the late night spice in your life.

You might think that snacking on veggies is a healthy way to satisfy your hunger quickly and put you that much closer to your goals, but vegetables are not always good for you! You need to be careful of which veggies you select late at night. Some of the more fibrous greens,  like brussel sprouts and broccoli, need extra time to digest and can fill you up with gas, making you too uncomfortable to sleep or leading to nighttime flatulence. Make sure your back blast area is all clear before you commit fratricide on a loved one.

I know it’s a given but sweets should definitely be marked off the list. Although satisfying to the taste buds, the sugar could give you a jolt of energy some fitness enthusiasts may not be use to having before bed. If you really want a sweet fix before bed, try a small serving of fruits.  These are lower in calories, easier to digest, and filled with nutrients that will curb your cravings.
